Official IJF gi specifications for competition. Know the rules before you compete — and choose gear that meets them.

What is IJF Approval? The International Judo Federation (IJF) tests and approves judogi that meet strict standards for fabric weight, weave construction, and durability. Only IJF-approved gis may be used in IJF World Tour events and many national-level competitions. Check with your federation for local competition requirements.

Gi Colour Rules

Pre-Competition Checklist

  • Gi is white or IJF blue (no mixed or faded colour)
  • Jacket reaches mid-thigh or below
  • Sleeves reach within 5 cm of wrist when arms are extended
  • Trouser legs reach within 5 cm of ankle
  • Fist fits between chest and collar when jacket is closed
  • Belt tied with correct knot (two wraps around body)
  • Gi is clean and in good repair — no tears or loose stitching
  • Branding patches are within size limits
  • Black, grey, or non-IJF colours
  • Jacket too short — doesn't reach thighs
  • Sleeves too short — more than 5 cm from wrist
  • Oversized branding or logos on prohibited areas
  • Collar too tight — fist cannot fit at chest
  • Torn or damaged fabric — will be failed at inspection
